Overview

CROATIA AND SLOVENIA TOUR

Croatia

Croatia is a European country in the Balkans.

Bathed by the Adriatic Sea, it shares a maritime border with Italy and its coastline is indented with peninsulas, bays and more than a thousand islands, forming an idyllic landscape similar to the Greek coast.

The main Croatian cities are Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik and Rijeka, among others.

It can be divided into three very specific regions, giving rise to different atmospheres and experiences: the plains and low hills, the high mountains and the aforementioned coastline with its jagged coastline.

In the central region and on the Adriatic coast, the climate is Mediterranean, with a mild spring and autumn and a hot summer, which is why it is considered a tourist destination for summer holidays.

Slovenia

Slovenia is a Central European country that also shares a coastline with the Adriatic Sea and borders Italy.

The country shares geography with four main European regions: the Alps, the Dinaric, the Pannonian and the Mediterranean. This offers a variety of experiences and adventures, with rivers, forests, mountains and much more, for those travelling through Slovenia.

The climate also influences this diversity of experiences, with climatic conditions differentiated by 3 zones: the continental climate in the north-east, the alpine climate in the mountainous regions and the sub-Mediterranean climate along the coast.

Slovenia's main cities are Ljubljana - the capital - Maribor, Celje and more.

1st day - Oporto / Dubrovnik:

Arrival at the airport 120 minutes before departure for boarding formalities. Departure on a special flight to Dubrovnik. Arrival and assistance from our private Portuguese or Spanish-speaking guide, who will accompany you from the airport of arrival to the airport of departure. Transfer to the Grand Hotel Park****, or similar. Dinner and accommodation.

2nd day - Dubrovnik - Boat trip - Dubrovnik:

Buffet breakfast. On board a genuine Dalmatian boat we'll start a relaxing boat trip (weather conditions permitting) that will take us to the Elaphiti Islands archipelago, known for its beaches and warm waters. We disembark on two islands and on one of them we have time to take a dip in its warm, transparent waters and stroll around the island's only village, with around 350 inhabitants (swimsuit recommended). Back on board, we'll have our fish barbecue lunch, served on board. Returning to the port of Gruz, we'll visit the historic centre of the UNESCO heritage city of Dubrovnik, the once powerful and aristocratic Republic of Ragusa, overlooking the waters of the Adriatic. Every step is a surprise with the unique beauty of the white stone façades and pink terracotta roofs, every street a story, every square a postcard waiting for you. The walking tour with a local guide takes us through the walled gateway to Onofrio Fountain Square and then to the Stradun, the city's noble avenue, with its terraces and traditional shops. We visit the Franciscan Monastery, which houses the oldest pharmacy in Croatia. Dinner and hotel accommodation.

3rd day - Dubrovnik - Split:

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Drive north, first along a scenic road bordering the Adriatic Sea, then through the mountainous region of Biokovo to Central Dalmatia, where we visit the industrial and cosmopolitan city of Split, Croatia's second largest. After lunch, we start the walking tour, with a local guide, of the historic centre integrated into the 3rd century Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the course of 1,700 years, the Roman emperor's residence was transformed within its walls into a surprising cluster of streets and alleys with shops, bars and even hotels lurking around every corner. In the inner courtyard of Peristil, between columns and Egyptian sphinxes, the feeling of being in an open-air museum is total, and the route between the city gates, the Golden and the Iron, takes us to the Riva, the seafront promenade, where sitting on a terrace we can enjoy the waltz of the ferries and their passengers entering the harbour. Accommodation and dinner at the Dioklecijan Hotel & Residence****, or similar.

4th day - Split - Trogir - Plitvice

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. In the morning we visit the historic town of Trogir, a World Heritage Site and a real open-air museum. A walking tour to admire the presence of all the civilisations that have passed through here: Greeks, Romans, Mongols, Magyars, Venetians and Turks. Lunch in a typical restaurant in this original town. Later, set off for the deep north-east, to meet one of the natural wonders of the world, the Plitvice Jezera nature park, a UNESCO heritage site. Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Jezero***, or similar.

Day 5 - Plitvice - Zagreb

Buffet breakfast. The morning will be dedicated to a walking tour with a local guide of this extraordinary ecological reserve, along trails expressly designed for enjoying nature in all its splendour. In an idyllic setting of leafy beech and fir forests, we'll walk alongside turquoise and emerald coloured lakes, fed by thriving waterfalls. Lunch. The journey continues to Zagreb, Croatia's capital and the main industrial and cultural centre of this young country. Panoramic tour of the city with a local guide, first visiting the "Green Horseshoe" where parks and buildings of great architectural wealth were created in the 19th century: the Art Pavilion, the Croatian National Theatre, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Mimara Museum, the University and the "Fountain of Life" by the universal sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Now in the upper town dominated by the silhouette of St Stephen's Cathedral, we pass the Cannon Tower by which everyone sets their clocks at noon, admire the colourful tiles of St Mark's Church, the Jesuit church of St Catherine, the Croatian Parliament and the Stone Gate, now a place of religious devotion. Dinner and accommodation at the Best Western Astoria Hotel****, or similar.

6th day - Zagreb - Bled - Ljubljana

After a buffet breakfast, we set off for the Slovenian border and visit placid Bled. Nestling against the Italian Alps and in complete harmony with the forest and a lake of glacial origin, it is one of Slovenia's best-known holiday resorts and is appreciated for its bucolic beauty and its thermal baths. The stop on the shores of Lake Bled is an opportunity to enjoy one of Slovenia's most beautiful landscapes. After lunch in a local restaurant, our journey continues towards Ljubljana. Arrival and panoramic walking tour of the historic centre with a local guide. Walking along the banks of the river from Preseren Square to Congress Square, we pass the three bridges, the market, St Nicholas Cathedral with its famous bronze doors, and the National Library, a masterpiece by the architect Plecnik. Accommodation and dinner at the Hotel Exe Lev****, or similar.

Day 7 - Ljubljana - Opatija - Dalmatia

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Departure towards Opatija, one of the most beautiful and well-equipped holiday resorts in the country, on the Istrian peninsula, all surrounded by the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. In 20th century Europe, it was the region that changed borders the most, following the changes of history five times. Lunch in a local restaurant. Our journey continues through the beautiful mountainous region of Gorski Kotar, where agricultural landscapes alternate with dense beech and oak forests, until we reach Dalmatia. Arrival, dinner and accommodation at the Hotel Split Inn by President****, or similar, in Split.

Day 8 - Dalmatia - Dubrovnik Airport - Harbour

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport at a time to be arranged locally. Boarding formalities and departure on a special flight to Porto. Arrival.
